PRACTICE SEMESTER 1

 December 2016 - TIME

For the work we did in class, it was the first time I tried oil paint. From my work, I learned that I really liked using oil paint. I liked the way the paint slid in the work and how I felt when painting, it felt smooth. Furthermore, I loved how colors blended. I learned two things. First, that medium is key. Not only the paint, but the oil and the different formulas that go into creating the medium. The second thing I learned is layering. I had not considered layering my works, and I think when you have a base color it brings the colors out and gives them a more realistic and interesting tones. Furthermore, by constant layering, you come to understand what you are painting. You start not caring for the details, but with broad brushstrokes and then go into smaller details from this. This not only increased my patience when painting, but made me brave when applying lines. Instead of fearing painting and being nervous, I learned to tackle it and become proud of the lines I make. Finally, I learned about myself throughout the process. I learned that even though I was working in mediums that were not paint, I needed to push myself more to painting because it relaxes me. It is also an area where I think that constant practice will make me better. Right now, I am okay, but I feel that there are a lot of errors that I could work on, such as the curtains, making the lines clearer, and getting the composition more interesting.
